The West Ham Way

The now mythical 'West Ham Way' created by Greenwood, cemented by Lyall. Continued by Redknapp (maybe?). Belittled by many.
Where do we stand on this in the modern way, in particular with David Moyes current success pushing him very quickly towards being our stand out manager since Harry.
Is success now the key? Or do we need to do it in the right way?
For me, being born in 1982, hearing "we play on the floor" being sung to Allardyce was one of my proudest moments. I like this new way under Moyes, and I'm happy to see hard working indviduals like Ogbonna, Soucek, Bowen etc push us forward.
I am interested in the opinions of those who followed us in the 70s and 80s though.

Not sure you can say that with any accuracy. I was a season ticket holder for most of the Redknapp reign and way after that too. He was very good at making the most out of not so good players.
I think his reputation and cockney accent stopped him being an England manager when he'd have been ideal imo. Being WH manager back then was tough even if Harry did take a bribe or two I don't care. He was brilliant as far as I'm concerned.
Harry had to face up to Man Utd; Liverpool; Arsenal; Leeds; Newcastle; Chelsea etc when they were the rich clubs based not on billionaire owners but, bigger crowds and European revenues.
Let's not forget that before we went up to 35,000 in about 2000, our previous maximum gate was 26,000. We compared to clubs like Wimbledon, Coventry, Southampton, Bolton & Palace for being the smallest clubs.
Every time we got a decent player we had to sell him to keep the club solvent and then buy a couple of cheap or free players which, I reckon always cramped Harry's style. Pushing the boat out was signing Hartson & Kitson for £4m iirc?
We only got DiCanio because no-one else would touch him after he pushed that referee over and had previous for being a moody cunt.
No. It's not possible to compare different eras imo. There wasn't the really silly money there is today but it was still relative. Today we are only second in gate size to Man Utd yet for the first time in yonks starting to play decent football that is light years from the game of 25 years ago...

I don't like tiki taka if that's what the West Ham Way is supposed to be.
I like PASSION and GRIT.
If I had a preference for a style of football I liked, it'd be rapid, end-to-end counter-attacking. I don't mean "park the bus and hope to nick a goal on the break." I mean constant, exciting, fast attacking, as if we had an Antonio in every position.

I hate the cliche but for me it means trying to win a game of football and giving it everything.
I hate the way we are always looking backwards, always looking for ex players to come back, looking to recreate what has happened before.
Be proud of your history, but that’s exactly what it is - history.

If you seperate Moyes 2 spells then in his second (Current) spell his pts/game is 1.37 equal with Bonds and only surpassed by Brooking (and Ted Fenton)

I like where we are going under Moyes, the players he's brought in are ones we've been crying out for. I like the football we are playing, it's refreshing to see quick movement and passing and pressing.

Moyes is doing a good job on getting us to play the West Ham way, players that give their all to win, fight and don’t give up, look to play it on the floor (but not always) and have a bit of skill about them to show us all.
Love it.
I feel the Harry comment is unfair. Pardew and Bilic did very well over the years. I enjoyed their management.

If you go by points per game it's incredibly close between Slav (1.33), Curbs (1.32), Harry (1.31) and Moyes (1.31) BFS is way down interestingly as he had a season in the Championship. (1.17).
If anyone, Moyes is the closest to playing the 'West Ham' way. Free-flowing attractive attacking play combined with some steel at the back.
We've lacked steel for too long and have often been bullied out of matches but now we have the players who will give it back - which is why I particularly like Dawson.
Coufal is clearly the result of a stag do in Prague which Stuart Pearce attended in 1991. Soucek is a lovely bloke off the field but is not afraid to dish it out if needs be.
Bowen can be a feisty little fucker when he wants to, too.
Brooking tells a lovely story of how Billy Bonds would watch after him and if some oppo player was being over aggressive in the tackles on him, Bonds took it personally and would pay the player 'a visit'.
I'm enjoying the Moyes way, and whether you lot agree whether it's the West Ham way - long may it continue.

In simple terms, the West Ham way is a blend between Brooking and Bonds. Football played the right way, mixed with blood and guts and honesty.
We may not have anyone as good as Trev, but Moyes is at least making sure that no one leaves anything on the pitch. We have eleven players working for each other, and that is what most fans want to see as a minimum.

I have very fond memories of the Redknapp era. The thing is, I don’t think we played beautiful football back then, but we had a certain style and we mixed it up. Was enjoyable, either way.
I’m not actually a massive fan of football that is all played along the deck, tikky takka bollocks. Actually bores me massively.

Our stand out manager in the EPL is Bilic but sadly it was just for one season.
The most points in a season 62,
Only manager to finish with a positive goal difference.
Fewest number of defeats in a season, just eight.
Equal the record of league wins in a season, 16, shared with Redknapp and Pardew.
And who knows because but for an Argy left back Pardew might have become our best achieving EPL manager to date.

All Curbs had going for him was being manager for that brief period when we had rich owners. Despite his experience and all the money he was given, Pardew, Bilic and even Zola all did better in their first ever seasons in the PL, and had us playing much better football.

Did you miss my point where I said Moyes has done well in HALF A SEASON. Bilic and even Roeder finished 7th.
I'd say Curbishley is our best manager since Redknapp. Very sad how his tenure came to an abrupt halt, as I really thought we was building something by 2008.
